Natural Remedy for Pink Eye

Yes, I do use Chamomile Tea for pinkeye since I was little kid, also, I did this to my son, too. It was successful. I am blessing that my mom is teaching me how she grew up in Mexico that how she use the herbal tea.

What do you do when your child wakes up with a red crusty eye (sometimes crusted shut) that is scratchy feeling, swollen and watery?
Or worse, your child wakes up with two, red crusty eyes that are scratchy feeling, swollen and watery?
Before I tell you what I do, let’s diagnose the problem.
I am sure most of you know from the symptoms, that it is probably pink eye or conjunctivitis. Not only is conjunctivitis uncomfortable but it is also extremely contagious. It can be a nightmare for a mother!

3 Types of Pink Eye

Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the outermost layer of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids – also known as the conjunctiva. There are 3 types of pink eye:
1. Viral - Pink eye that is viral normally affects one eye and then a few days later the second eye becomes affected. The discharge with viral pink eye is usually watery.
2. Bacterial - Pink eye caused by a bacterial infection will affect both eyes at the same time and the discharge is usually yellow-green and thicker.
3. Allergy - Pink eye may also be caused by an allergic reaction.
Since pink eye is so contagious, good hand washing should be practiced, avoid sharing towels and avoid touching the eyes with your hand (which is especially difficult for children)!

What do I do when someone wakes up with pink eye?

When our oldest son was very young, he had pink eye. Being the concerned mother, I took him to the doctor who prescribed an eye ointment. Later, while relaying to a sister-in-law how difficult the ointment was to apply, she asked if I had tried teabags. Being skeptical, I dismissed the natural remedy until our next bout with pink eye. With the next outbreak, not wanting to apply the ointment again,  I gave the natural remedy a try. I am happy to report that I have not been to the doctor because of pink eye since – that was 26 years ago!
I reach for black tea teabags now! The earlier the treatment is started the quicker the results are seen.

The procedure is simple:

1. Make a cup of tea using a teabag with black tea in it.
2. Allow the teabag to steep a few minutes in the hot water.
3. Remove the teabag from the cup of water but do not squeeze.
4. Allow the teabag to cool so that it is still warm but not so hot that it will burn. Remember, the eye area is sensitive so have the teabag very warm but not hot.
5. Place the teabag on the affected eye and leave for at least 5 min. – I have the child lie down on the sofa with eyes closed and a hand-towel draped around their neck and face so the excess tea does not drip on their clothes or the sofa. If the child tolerates this well, I let them lie with the teabag on the eye (or eyes) for as long as possible – usually 15 – 20 min. Periodically, I will gently squeeze the teabag so the tea puddles on the closed eyelid. It is fine to let the tea get into the eye and it will actually aid in the healing.
6. Repeat 3 – 4 times per day until the eye clears up – usually within 1 day there is remarkable improvement.
The tea helps to clean the goop out of the eyes and also soothes the swelling and irritation by drawing out the infection.
Disclaimer: I am not a doctor and I do not pretend to give medical advice but I do want to share what works for me – I hope it helps you.

FEVER, will you just go away, please?

Last Tuesday, in the early morning, I started to breastfeeding Silas, somehow, I feel his mouth became warm. I knew its FEVER! So, I decided to think positive til few minutes  I decided to wake Todd up so let him know that Silas might has fever. He decided to get the rectal temperature to check if he has fever or not. It was around 100.0 so we decided to call his Day Care to not attend. First thing in our minds, of course Silas' 1st birthday this Saturday. We want him to get better by Friday as can. I asked my friend to watch him for around 6 hours so Todd needs go to work to meet his new CFO and I got new job that I can't use PTO. Same as Wednesday, however, it was worst than Tuesday because Silas kept tired and sleepy. Thank god that he can eat and drink, too. Todd took him to doctor at 3pm and I met him late after 3:40pm. First time I saw him not be himself because Tuesday or last time he had fever that he always activity and laughs! Now, he was so not himself that hit me hard to hate to see him sleepy and quiet while Todd holds him to let him plenty rest . Todd told me that Silas did took blood test to check if he has low white cells and the result was normal. WHEW! Anyways, I tried to cheer him up to surprise him that I am here but he looked at me quietly. I asked him, where's hurt that he got needle shot? He point his own middle finger with animal band aid to me and it does making me smiling!

Today, he's still sick with fever. I did e-mail to people who we invited them for Silas' birthday party this Sat maybe we will cancel if Silas not feel well.

Mini-Kitchen for Silas

I noticed that my son loves to play with the plastic containers kitchen and food cans that he can open the cabinets in kitchen. I don't mind to let him to play with those because all children do curious at new something everyday. Silas is one of them that he likes to play it in the kitchen. However, my kitchen is small at my apartment so he is in my way while I need to prepare food or cooking. I need to think about SAFETY for my son! I know that I need to buy gate to not let him enter the kitchen but it is too silly because it is okay for him to curious to play and likes to make the noise of plastic container bowl with lid. But I have to responsible to watch him to not play the toxic cleaning under sink. However, I plan to throw the cleaning supplies when it is no more of liquids so I can buy more non-toxic cleaning or homemade natural cleaning. Also, I took my friend's advice about magnet cabinet lock which I need to order because I live in apartment that I don't want to use any screw to make hole on cabinet. For magnet cabinet doesn't need to use screw or damage to put on it. Nice!

I saw the ikea.com and have mini kitchen costs 99.99 which it is sale! It is so perfect because it is birch plywood and good for Silas to play. Same time, he don't need go to kitchen with me. I read the product description and said recommended for children 3 years and older can play. Or, should I order fisher-price grow with me cook and care kitchen. The fisher-price is more plastic but the accessories is included but I have to take it away because its small parts that cause choking hazard. While Ikea mini kitchen is not comes with accessories but I am fine with it because I can find the right age for my son can play alike big size of fruits/vegetables. One problem is that he loves to chew something. The kitchen is perfect Silas because of his develop with his motor skills. He loves to push/pull. Oh, both can adjust to heights when the child grows. One question is that my son will be 1 year old, is it okay to buy it for him? I think that I like Ikea mini Kitchen!

Mini-Kitchen from Ikea $99.99
Fisher-Price Kitchen from Toy R Us $79.99

Where the time goes? Oh, it's March, 2013!

Hi everyone,

I know that i haven't post this since 2012, right now I am trying my best to keep up for any news!

My son is doing good and teaching me lot of patience and love (yes I understand the love from Todd as my husband.) and understand for me to be mother than I used to be infant/assistant teacher at daycare for two years. Can't believe that Silas will be one year old on March 16th, 2013! His theme will be safari alike he is king jungle/safari since he was born. My baby shower theme was jungle. Todd and I am looking forward to celebrate on his first birthday. *cheers*

Last February 15, we have new niece name Yovella Ruth Gallegos from my brother! Wish that I can meet her but thank god for having facetime!
